Black Spiny-Necked Swamp Turtle
The black spine-neck swamp turtle (Acanthochelys spixii), also commonly known as the spiny-neck turtle or Spix’s sideneck turtle, pink belly snapping turtle for sale
is a species of turtle in the family Chelidae.
The species is endemic to South America, specially in the Southern Cone region.
Famous for their numerous spiky tubercles on their neck, arms and legs, Spixii prefer shallow water with some deeper areas, and land with lots of plant cover.
Black spine-neck swamp turtle
They make very good tank turtles as they are the smallest species of their genus
– with fully grown adults only reaching 5″ – 6″
… In nature, snails amphibians, and plants make up much of their diet – ours take cut fish, beef heart and pellets.
Commonly known as “Spixii” among turtle enthusiasts,
little is known about their living and breeding habits in nature.
In the US only a handful have ever been produced…
Future breeding projects may some day make this rare species more commonly available
Threats:
The Western Swamp Tortoise is the most endangered Australian reptile. With limited numbers and habitat remaining they are very vulnerable to any changes including land clearing for housing and agriculture, use of pesticides and fertilisers and fire. Climate change also poses a potential threat. Perth has recently experienced drier winters. If swamps dry too early, females may not produce eggs.
Feral predators like cats, rats and foxes also eat tortoises and tortoise eggs. pink belly snapping turtle for sale
Saving Wildlife Together:
Since 1989,
Perth Zoo has bred more than 800 Western Swamp Tortoises finally 600 have been released to boost their numbers at the zoo.
Feral predators like cats, rats and foxes also eat tortoises and tortoise eggs.
Help us continue our work to save the Western Swamp Tortoise. By breeding these little guys for release, we’re able to boost their numbers in the wild into areas protected by the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
– for now only a precious few are in the US.
A spixii is found in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and possibly Paraguay.

My turtle arrived in great condition. I had my order delayed due to the weather but it was worth it. I was very surprised to see how energetic my turtle is, especially after being shipped. He isn’t scared of me and walks right onto my hand. I’m very pleased with my purchase and will definitely buy again.

Our turtle arrived on time, healthy and active. It only took 15 minutes for him to start exploring his new home and climbing on the ‘rock pile’ filter. We dropped a couple food pellets in and up snatched them right up!
